If your home is heated by gas, the heat pump rebate you can use depends on three things: the age of your furnace, your household income and your region. Sort those out and the right program is obvious.
Heat pump rebates for gas-heated homes
| Your situation | Best-fit rebate | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Gas furnace 15+ years old, ducted home | FortisBC dual fuel rebate | Up to $4,000 · $8,000 income-qualified |
| Gas furnace or boiler, income-qualified | CleanBC Energy Savings Program | Set by income level (changed July 6, 2026) |
| Gas heat in Northern BC | Northern fuel-switching rebate | Up to $8,000 |
| Gas heat, not income-qualified, Lower Mainland, going fully off gas | No standard rebate since April 11, 2025 | Dual fuel is the rebate route |
| Any of the above | Federal National Heat Pump Rebate | Coming early 2027 |
Why dual fuel is the rebate sweet spot
A dual fuel system pairs a central air-source heat pump with a new high-efficiency gas furnace. The heat pump heats your home through most of the year and cools it in summer. Below the switchover temperature (5°C or lower on the coast, 2°C or lower in the Interior and North) the gas furnace takes over, so you’re never short of heat on the coldest nights. FortisBC pays up to $4,000 toward it, or $8,000 for income-qualified households, when it replaces a gas furnace at least 15 years old.
- Keeps the comfort and backup of gas heat for the coldest days.
- Adds air conditioning with the same system.
- Works with the ductwork most Metro Vancouver gas-heated houses already have.
- Must be on FortisBC’s qualified dual fuel systems list, with one AHRI reference covering outdoor unit, indoor unit and furnace.
Requirements every heat pump rebate shares
- A program-approved heat load calculation, so the system is sized room by room.
- An installer who is a member of the Home Performance Contractor Network and listed for that rebate, and TSBC-licensed for gas work.
- Qualifying equipment from the program’s list. Self-installs never qualify.
- You apply yourself, usually within 6 months of the paid invoice.
What about the federal rebate?
The Canada Greener Homes Grant and Loan are closed. On October 8, 2026 the federal government announced a National Heat Pump Rebate: up to $10,000 for households below median income and $2,000 for others, designed to stack with provincial programs. It is not open yet and is expected in early 2027. It isn’t yet known whether installs completed before launch will count, so we’ll update this page when rules are published.
PST on heat pumps
Heat pumps have been exempt from BC’s 7% PST since April 1, 2022, while gas heating equipment is taxed at 12%. On a dual fuel system the heat pump portion is exempt. The October 1, 2026 PST changes didn’t list heat pumps, but confirm the current status with the Ministry of Finance before relying on it.
How BC Wide helps with the heat pump rebate
BC Wide’s own TSBC-licensed gas fitters and Red Seal technicians install and service furnaces, heat pumps and dual fuel systems across Greater Vancouver, never subcontractors. That matters for rebates: the person filling in commissioning data is the person who installed your system, so details match the paperwork.
Phone or email us with your furnace age, home size and city. We’ll confirm which rebate fits, give you a free written estimate for qualifying equipment, and explain how to check any contractor’s listing on the HPCN directory. We answer (604) 473-9690 seven days a week, or write to info@bcwide.ca.
Choosing a heat pump that actually qualifies
The cheapest quote is often the one that loses the rebate: a unit that isn’t on the list, a missing load calculation or an installer who isn’t registered. Ask any contractor to show you the qualifying model list entry and HPCN listing before you sign.
